Advantages and Disadvantages of VNA Design

Determining the ideal aisle width for your application means you need to look at a lot of factors. Is Very Narrow Aisle, or VNA, right for your warehouse? In this post, I am going to go over the advantages and disadvantages of VNA design, and when you would use it.

First of all, Very Narrow Aisle is defined as less than 6 feet between the racks, and is usually used with selective pallet rack. Often, guidance systems like guide rail or wire is used to keep the trucks on track. The main component that decides your aisle width is your lift truck. If you are doing VNA, you will need a special forklift to navigate the aisles, you can’t use a standard forklift. VNA trucks (turret trucks) usually only turn the load instead of the whole vehicle, and aren’t dock working trucks.

Will VNA work for you?

Advantages:

  • Improves space, you can store 40%-50% more inventory
  • Good for applications with less than pallet storage
  • High productivity in full pallet retrieval

Disadvantages:

  • Requires a certain lift truck which is more expensive
  • Two vehicles cannot pass at the same time
  • Lower flexibility, you usually have to store the same SKU
  • Requires a “hand-off” of inventory from the VNA forklift to a dock working forklift on outbound, and the opposite for inbound
